Mrs. Rebecca Watkins
Mrs. Rebecca Watkins died at her home on Davis Creek last Tuesday morning. She was about 40 years old and leaves a husband and ten children, the youngest two years old and the eldest 22 years. Deceased was a sister of Clint Barnes, the well-known rancher, and, with her family, came to Montana from New Mexico about a year ago.

Rebecca was my husband's GREAT GRANDMOTHER on his mother's side.

Information regarding dates (births and deaths) comes from pages of a family Bible which my mother-in-law had kept and was found after her death.

Rebecca C. Barnes was the daughter of John William Barnes and Cyreena Young Burnside. She was born 25 April 1861 and died 19 December 1899 in Montana.

Rebecca had 2 siblings:
1. Dewitt Clinton Barnes born 4 November 1854 in VA and died 16 June 1931 in Flora
Vista, NM
2. Amanda Ellen Barnes born 28 September 1858 in Riverside, NM (a different account states she was born in 1857 and not 1858 in Chillicothe, MO) and died 19 December 1943 in Phoenix, AZ. She married Louis Pieper. He was born 2 January 1855 and died 26 August 1940. Both Amanda and Louis are buried at Rolling Hills Cemetery in Prescott, AZ.

Rebecca's mother was a Burnside . . . name originally spelled BYRNSIDE. This family came from Ireland.

Rebecca married William Henry Watkins on 19 November 1876 in Claremore, Cooweskoowee, District, Cherokee Nation. Ten children were born to this union:

1. Cyreena V. "Rena" Watkins born 31 January 1878 in Kansas and died 18 June 1951 in Belt, MT. Cyreena married Thomas Jefferson Atkinson on 1 November 1900 in Montana. They had 5 children.

2. Franklin Clyde Watkins born 20 July 1880 in Colorado Springs, El Paso Co, CO and died in C0 in 1939.

3. Mattie Johnson Watkins born 24 July 1883 and died in 1944. She married Dee Clarence Apperson. Dee was the brother to sister's Olive's husband. Dee and Mattie had 3 sons, but apparently all died as infants.

4. Myrtle Watkins born 13 March 1885 and died Dec 1950. She married Peter Alvin Boyer on 21 October 1903 in Lewiston, Fergus Co, MT. The had 4 children.

5. William John Watkins born 10 June 1887 and died 11 January 1954 at Hobson, MT. He married Dorethea E. Erwin on 17 December 1912 at Lewiston, MT. Seven children were born to this union.

6. Mae Watkins born 19 May 1889 . . . MY HUSBAND'S GRANDMOTHER. She married Albert Henry Rowe on 3 July 1906 at Fort Benton, Cascade Co, MT. They later divorced. She died in April 1954 . . . cause of death was cancer. She was laid to rest on April 26 at Sunset Memorial Park which is located in Eureka, California.

7. Maggie Watkins born 21 September 1891 and died 10 June 1904. She was only 13 years old at the time of her death.

8. Susan Graceful Watkins born12 August 1893 and died in 1953. She married Louis John Holmes. They had 4 children. Both are buried at Pleasant View Cemetery in Belt, MT.

9. Olive Josephine Watkins born 7 May 1895 and died in 1964 at Aztec, NM. She married Elton Apperson on 27 July 1912. They had 5 children. Both are buried at the Aztec Cemetery.

10. Leona Naomi Watkins born 13 September 1897 and died 1 May 1937 and is buried in Dallas, Oregon. She married Stephan Alfonso Hurd in MT on 11 September 1919. They had 5 children.

On this page is a photo of Rebecca's gravestone. I'm not exactly certain where her grave is located though. The photo was sent to me from a relative of my husbands. She could not remember where both stones were located either. All that is known, is that both Rebecca and Maggie are buried in Montana.
