Catherine Patricia Dean, 92, of Scotland, MD, passed away October 29, 2019 at St. Mary's Nursing Center, Leonardtown, MD, with her family by her side.
Catherine was born on July 21, 1927, in Scotland, MD, to the late Joseph Austin Ridgell and the late Cecilia Plowden King.
On August 16, 1943, Catherine married her loving husband, Nelson Edward Dean, at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Ridge, Md. They were together for more than 53 wonderful years before his passing in 1996.
She lovingly raised 13 children, teaching them to be independent and faithful to the Lord. She was a life-long member of St. Michael's Catholic Church.
Catherine was an excellent cook and enjoyed making delicious meals for her family, especially for holiday events. She also enjoyed canning the harvest from her husband's garden. Being a talented seamstress, she made many beautiful quilts which she gave as gifts. Her crochet works were also treasured by those who were blessed enough to have received them
Catherine enjoyed traveling and found great pleasure visiting her children in various locations across the country. She was an accomplished writer with a special passion for writing poetry, many of which were published. But above all, her greatest love was for her family.
Catherine is survived by her children: Brenda Justice (Everett) of Hudson, NC, Mary Lou Simpkins of Ridge, MD, James "Sonny" Dean (Gail) of Scotland, MD, Shirley Epperson of St. Inigoes, MD, Hazel Neil (Larry) of Chiefland, FL, Leonard Dean (Linda) of Scotland, MD, Winifred "Winnie" Beerman of Ridge, MD, Arthur Dean (Cyndi) of Murfreesboro, TN, Crystal Cabellon (Alberto) of Renton, WA, Carol Kelley (Craig) of Ridge, MD, and George Dean (Steve) of Harper's Ferry, WV; her daughter-in-law, Ramona Dean of Hollywood, MD.
Also survived by her sisters, Clara Norris of Leonardtown, MD, and Eleanor Tippett (Francis) of Leonardtown, MD; 34 grandchildren; 52 great grandchildren; seven great-great grandchildren and many nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family and friends.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was also preceded in death by her daughter, Patsy Nickless; son Edward Dean; granddaughter, Karen Byrne; siblings Leslie Ridgell, George Ridgell, Grace Pratt, Austin Ridgell, Susanna Wolf, Thomas Gregory Ridgell, and Cecilia Titus
The family will receive friends on Monday, November 4, 2019, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. with a Mass of Christian Burial celebrated by Father Peter Giovanoni at 12:00 p.m. at St. Michael's Catholic Church, 16566 Three Notch Road, Ridge, MD, 20680. Inurnment will be private at a later date.
Serving as pallbearers will be her grandsons, David Nickless, Robert Dean, Jason Dean, Andrew Dean, John English, and her great grandson, Josh Slade. Honorary pallbearers will be her grandsons Keith Nickless, James Nickless, Charles Nickless, Darryl Nickless, Michael Dean, Christopher Dean, Steven Cabellon, Kevin Teague, Wesley Teague, and Randy Neil.
