After graduating from Lock Springs High School, Irlene attended Maryville Teachers College and briefly taught school in Harrison County. Leaving teaching behind she moved to Chicago where she married Joseph Patrick Walsh and spent the rest of her life there working mostly for the Civil Service.

She died in 1968 after a lengthy battle with breast cancer and it's complications.
