Harold was the first child born to Elsie Bowen James and William Keith James. He was born on his grandfather's farm in Harrison County, Missouri.

Harold graduated from Lock Springs High School.

Harold joined the Navy and was sworn in at Kansas City, Missouri, 10 days after the attack on Pearl Harbor. He first got duty in the Hawaii area in the spring of 1946. He came through once, in early 1945, on his way to Eniwetok. He completed his naval hitch in April of 1948, was discharged in Honolulu and a week later signed up for the Air Force.

Harold was a championship pitcher for the base softball team at Ford Island. The base team soon won every title in sight. He had one perfect game where he struck out all 21 batters. One of the stock complaints from batters was "can't bunt when you can't see the ball". It was said that Harold threw a "jet ball".

He retired from the Air Force in South Hadley, Massachusetts where he remained.

Harold married Gertrude Sheffield 11 October 1943 in Jacksonville, Florida.
