Raymond W. Baumgardt, 77, of Lafayette, died Thursday, Dec. 27, 2007, at Home Hospital.

Born on May 20, 1930, in Lafayette, he was the son of the late Gus and Bessie "Bell" Bowsher Baumgardt. He was a lifelong resident of the area and graduated from Jefferson High School in 1948.

His marriage was to Betty Venable in Lafayette on Oct. 29, 1950, and she survives.

Mr. Baumgardt was a deputy with the Tippecanoe County Sheriff's Department from 1972 until retiring in 1990. He was a member of the National Guard, Fraternal Order of Police and American Legion Post 11. He enjoyed reading, painting, hunting, fishing and assembling military models.

Surviving are a son, Steve Baumgardt (wife: Jacqueline), and a daughter, Cheryl Francis (husband: Daniel), and a sister, Gertrude Maxon (husband: Wilbur), all of Lafayette.

Friends may call 12:30-2 p.m. with the service at 2 p.m. on Monday Hippensteel Funeral Home with St. Elizabeth Hospice Spiritual Counselor John T. Johnson officiating. Interment Tippecanoe Memory Gardens. Surviving are 4 grandchildren, Jennifer Baker, Melissa Underwood (husband: Jay), Marc Baumgardt (wife: Meghan Cox), Angela Frost (husband: Jeromie); 4 great- grandchildren, Alison Gray, Jayson Frost, Elise and Luke Underwood.
