Edward A. Baumgardt, 83, of Lafayette, died at 5:32 a.m. Sunday, May 28, 2006, at Home Hospital. Born Dec. 31, 1922, to the late Christopher Augustus and Bessie Bell Bowsher Baumgardt in Lafayette, he was a life resident of Tippecanoe County. His first marriage was to Cathy Lewis, and she preceded him in death. His second marriage was to Alice M. Rayburn Ward on June 17, 1950, in West Lafayette, and she survives. Mr. Baumgardt was a farmer and worked as a mechanic at Horner's, DeFouw Chevrolet, By Pass Auto Repair and Don Miller Repair before retiring in 1976. He enjoyed gardening, flowers and gathering walnuts. Surviving with his wife are two sons, John A. Baumgardt Sr. (wife: Sharon) of Fowler and Jerry Lee Baumgardt (wife: Kathleen M.) of Indianapolis; two daughters, Carol D. Tyrrell (husband: Gregory) of Clarks Hill and Sandra K. Leuck of Lafayette; two sisters, Mabel Irene Underhill and Gertrude Maxson (husband: Wilbur), all of Lafayette; and a brother, Ray Baumgardt (wife: Betty) of Lafayette.
Visitation will be 5-8 p.m. Thursday at Soller-Baker Lafayette Chapel, 400 Twyckenham Blvd., with service there 10 a.m. Friday, Pastor Allen Sharp officiating. Interment Concord Cemetery. Also surviving are 10 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. Preceded in death by a son, Edward Allen Baumgardt; and 3 sisters, Helen Carrico, Florence Underhill and Mildred Vaughn.
