ATWATER PIONEER DIES AT TURLOCK
William C Richey, well known in this city, died Friday at the home of his daughter, Mrs O D Williams, following a brief illness, although he had been ill for about two years.
William Carl Richey was born in Jefferson county, Illinois October 30, 1831. He resided there until the year 1842 and went to Texas with his father, mother and one brother. His father and brother died there, leaving him and his mother. They then went to Arkansas in the year 1848. In the feverish days of gold, he made his mind up to come to California and he reached what is now Ione city in the year 1852. He resided there and built several mining flumes and erecting saw mills, and in the year 1863 he moved to Buena Vista, which name was changed to Richey in his honor, he having erected nearly every building there. He was united in marriage to Miss Minerva Dillion in 1857. They moved to Atwater in the year 1881, living in Merced County until the loss of a loving wife and mother in 1904. He has since the year 1912 resided with his sons and daughters until his death January 21, 1916. He was therefore 84 years, 2 months and 22 days.
Mr Richey was of Scotch-English descent, and was one of California's sturdy pioneers, having driven an ox team across the plains in the thrilling times of Indian massacres and frontier warfare.
He reared a family of eleven children, eight son and three daughters, living to bury five loving sons and a devoted mother. Three sons and three daughters still survive, Wm Henry, John Calhoun and Edward; Mrs W W Abbott, Mrs F A McConnell and Mrs O D Williams.
He was widely and favorably known throughout Merced, Stanislaus and Amador counties.
The funeral was held at 11 am Monday from the chapel of the G S Wright undertaking parlors, internment being at Merced at 2 pm, Rev Hugh McNinch officiating.
