Death certificate and 1900 census confirm that the birth and death dates on the stone are incorrect. The birth date on his tombstone is actually his brother Amos's birth date. Amos died in 1879. 18 Jan 1873 is the birth date on James's death certificate per Mike Tobias 2016.

George Wentzel received a letter from his brother, C. Wentzel, who is a trumpeter in Co. I, 1st Cavalry, located in Batanzaz, Luzon, P. I. He stated that he had the unexpected pleasure of meeting his brother Jim, who is on board the battleship Brooklyn, now lying in Manila Bay.
