Graveside services for Worley "Bunch" Burkhart, 97, will be Thursday, Nov. 8, 2007, at Mt. Zion Cemetery with the Rev. Tommy Higle officiating.
Born on Nov. 24, 1909 in Fish Creek, Cooke County, Texas, to Eunice Ira and Ellie Mae Gordon Burkhart, he died on Nov. 6, 2007 at an Ardmore health care facility.
He and Ruthey Jane Acrea were married on Sept. 28, 1929, in Carter County. He was preceded in death by his wife on Nov. 15, 2003; infant daughter, Jane Marie Burkhart; his parents, five brothers and three sisters.
A retired farmer and rancher, he had been a Missionary Baptist preacher since the age of four. He traveled with his family by covered wagon to the Shady Dale area of Love County where he spent the rest of his life. He started as a minister at the age of 19 and was ordained at age 20. He pastored many churches in southern Oklahoma and north Texas. After entering the nursing home, he was still often called on at times to deliver a sermon to the residents.
Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, John and Carol Burkhart and Bob and Janice Burkhart, Marietta; daughter, Billie M. McEntire, Grand Prairie, Texas; a brother, George Van Burkhart, Marietta; 11 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren, and 15 great-great-grandchildren.
