Son of Nathan Columbus & Fayanna Elnora (Kemmerer), he married Emma Violet Nutt on March 15, 1899 at Taylorville, Illinois. Joe and Emma's first three children, an infant girl that died at birth, Gordon Harold and Dallas Carmen, were born in Taylorville, where Joe farmed. Around 1905 the family moved to Cavalier, Pembina Co., North Dakota.
They bought 5 acres of land in town and 320 acres 0f land 4 1/2 miles NW of Cavalier. Besides farming Joe was in the dairy business.
It was at the house in the town of Cavalier where their daughter Edythe Carolyn and son Myron Joseph was born. In 1918 they sold their farm and moved south to Texas.
