DEATH CLAIMS FONTANA MAN DURING SLEEP
Gerald Edwards Ward, 86, Passes Peacefully Away; Native of England; Rites Planned

FONTANA, Feb. 18. Gerald Edward Ward, 86, Fontana resident for 23 years, passed away quietly in his sleep early Wednesday at his home, 450 South Palmetto avenue.
Funeral services will be conducted Friday, Feb. 20, at 2 p.m. at the Ingold Funeral chapel in Rialto. The Rev. J. A. Macdonald, pastor of the Fontana Community church will be In charge. Private services will be held at Rialto Park cemetery.
Mr. Ward was born In Carlyle, England, on March 15, 1855, and came to America when he was 18 years old, via New York and Panama, the journey occupying seven weeks. He first settled in California and later went to Old Mexico.
MARRIED IN OAKLAND
In 1891 he married In Oakland, his bride being the daughter of the late Edward S. Hast, for many years secretary of the Bank of California in San Francisco. Last September the Wards celebrated their golden wedding anniversary. Mr. Ward was managing director of the Mazatlan water works for 28 years. From 1905 until his retirement he acted as British consul at Mazatlan, Mexico. In recent years, Mr. Ward devoted his time to writing histories.
Surviving are his wife, Gertrude A., of Fontana; two sons, Edward G., of Glendale; Charles B., of Coalinga; two daughters, Mary Varnado, of Fontana; and Mabel Bayly of San Bernardino, and five grandchildren. Mr. Ward attended St. John's Episcopal church at San Bernardino and the Fontana Community church. He was past master of the Masonic order at Mazatlan Del Rosa School to Give Program Friday

Macdonald. pastor of the Fontana Community church, officiating. Interment followed in Rialto Park cemetery, Rialto, Durlnff the services Mrs. Catherine Forbes played "The Prayer" from Hansel and Gretel. Pallbearers were M. Q. Robson, M C. Hunter. N. R. Bavla. G. E. Ward, H. A. Ingold and E. N. Varnado. Honorary pallbearers were W. S. Connor, J. D. McGregor, J. P. Rurney. R. E. Boyle. W. C. CostellO, R. G. Manifold, R. E. Dowd, Jack Claypool and Howard Surr.
