He was born in Ohio May 15, 1831 and was one of a family of thirteen, two of whom survive him, Clayborn Owens of Bethany, Nebraska and Mrs. I.C. Ellison of Omaha. He was married to Zilpha Darting in 1855 at Harmony, Indiana and to them six children were born, three of whom and the mother have preceded him to the Great Beyond.

In 1862 Mr. Owens freighted from Omaha to Denver by ox team returning in August of the same year and enlisted in Company C 29th Iowa Volunteers serving for three years during the Civil War. After his discharge he returned to Harrison County where he made his home for 64 years.
