Ellender "Nellie" McNeel married Jacob OWENS on 6 Oct 1825. They had eleven children together. In 1856, Nellie and Jacob moved from Indiana to Harrison County, Iowa.


Ellender was blind in her later life, as were three of her daughters; Lydia, Jane and Priscilla. It has been speculated that the cause of the blindness might have been cataracts, but it is more likely that it was a hereditary strain of glaucoma.
