George was the 6th son of 13 children born to Kenny and Mary MacDonald. George and his brothers were all born at Tolsmaville on Cockburn Island. He attended school in Gore Bay and became a fisherman. He worked with his father Kenny out of Gore Bay, Kincardine and Port Stanley on the fish tug "Donald Mac".
George and Glenna MacLean were married on the 20th of November 1936 in Kincardine and lived there when their three eldest children were born.
In WWII George joined the Royal Canadian Navy and served aboard the H.M.C.S. Saguenay. On December 1,1940 while escorting Convoy HG-47 about 300 miles west of Ireland, the Saguenay was torpedoed by the Italian submarine Argo. They lost 21 men. She managed to return to Barrow-in-Furness largely under her own power but without most of her bow. George was transferred to the H.M.C.S. Sorel, a Flower-Class Corvette. At war's end George returned to his family and fishing on Lake Erie. They settled in Erieau where he worked for the Doug Goodison fishing fleet aboard the Mar-Vel-Ann. He retired after fifty years of commercial fishing. George and Glenna raised a family of eight children and celebrated their 58th Wedding Anniversary in 1986.
