Neil was the first child born to Kenny and Mary MacDonald. He grew up in Cockburn Island where he attended Bay School with his brothers Roger, Ray, and Norman. Neil was twelve years old when the family moved to Gore Bay, Manitoulin Island. He worked as a big game guide and later as a commercial fisherman with Purvis Bros. Fisheries. He and Marvel Thibault were married in 1928; they lived at Burnt Island, Gore Bay, and Silver Water. In WW2, Neil was promoted to Sergeant for his service in the Royal Canadian Army Medical Corp, Field Ambulance. He and Marvel raised eleven children.
