Robert Wright was born to Robert Sr and Catherine Mell Wright. Robert's father had spent a good share of his adult life in Kentucky, but struck out to Ohio where Robert Jr. was born. Soon after his birth, the Wrights moved back to Campbell County, Kentucky where Robert grew up.

In 1851, when Robert Jr. was seventeen the Wrights emigrated to Coles County, Illinois. When Robert was nineteen, he married Sarah Virginia Moffett on December 18, 1853 at Ashmore in Coles County.

He was an Illinois volunteer serving in Company H, 3rd Regiment of the Missouri Cavalry from January 3, 1862 to December 31, 1864; bugler and extra duty ambulance driver. Rank In: Private;

After Sarah died in 1884, All of the family members moved west, most settling in Kansas and Oklahoma, with some ending up in Colorado and California.
