It is not exactly known how Garfield was given the nickname of Clyde, but we do know that he was only 5 years of age when his mother passed in 1884.

Like all other surviving members of the family, he traveled west to Kansas and Oklahoma, and is known to be in Greensburg, KS with his sisters in 1887. He is listed in the 1900 census as living in Braman, OK as a boarder, age 21. His brother James W. lived there also. By 1910, he is found in the Denver area, with his sisters Mattie Rossiter and Minnie Fenton (the sisters using their married names).

The family bible records his name as Garfield M. Wright. The 1880 census lists him as Mitchell, but it would seem that the nickname Clyde stuck with him throughout his life, as it shows up on all subsequent census records (his niece, Elsie Catherine Wright Robertson, listed his name as "Garfield Clyde" in a 1955 family history). He was found in 1918 in Portland, OR (draft registration), and again in the 1920 census.

By 1930, he was living in the San Fernando, California area. The family bible record lists his death as January 1935, at the age of 55. (UPDATE: Found Clyde M Wright in the California Death Index, date of death is 4/11/1935.)

No photos of Garfield Mitchell "Clyde" Wright have ever been discovered.
