William A. Murray . . . Maeser Pioneer honored at Funeral. Funeral Services For W. A. Murray Held January 7.

Funeral services were held Wednesday of last week at 11 a.m. in the Maeser Ward Chapel for William Ashby Murray, 76, who died Sunday, January 4, at 5:30 a. m. in Uintah County Hospital after an illness.

Burial was in the Maeser Fairfield Cemetery with dedication of the grave by Alma Preece. Pallbearers were Clarence, William, Chester, Cecil and Glen Murray and Berney Mondrogon.

Mr. Murray was born June 21, 1882 in Spanish Fork to Jeremiah H. and Mary Ashby Murray. He married Beatrice Howarth October 22, 1901 in Vernal; she died March 22, 1907. On November 9, 1909 in Vernal, he married Stella Woodruff. She died March 4, 1913. He married Elizabeth Hughes March 21, 1914 in Vernal. She died August 19, 1946.

Survivors include three sons and eight daughters; Chester J, Salt Lake City; Clarence, Myton; William, Yakima, Washington; Mrs. Nellie Retch, Las Vegas, Nevada; Mrs. Elmer (Virginia) Trevenen, Maybell, Colorado; Mrs. Ben (Winona) Mondrogon, Midvale; Mrs. William (Letha Mae) Dean, San Leandro, California; Mrs. Miles (Beulah) Hall, Mrs. Harold (LaRena) Abplanalp, Mrs. Dee (Clara) Jenkins, Mrs. Leland (Bea) Bennion, all of Vernal.

Prayer at the mortuary was offered by Carl Gardiner. Prelude and postlude music at the services was by Ruth Jones. Invocation was by Bishop Wilbur. A trio, Betty Mecham, Ruth Jones and Mildred Mansfield, sang "Sometime We'll Understand," accompanied by Margaret Caldwell.

First speaker was Glen Oaks followed by a vocal duet, "Abide With Me," by Gerald and Margaret Caldwell, accompanied by Miss Jones. Second speaker was W. E. Bodily and Margaret Caldwell played a violin solo entitled, " Perfect Day," accompanied by Ruth Jones.

Remarks were made by Bishop Leo Hacking and the trio sang, "Jesus Savior, Pilot Me," accompanied by Mrs. Caldwell. Benediction was by Birchell Goodrich.

Mr. Murray came to Vernal with his family in 1887, when he was only 4 years old. They settled in what was Mill Ward and is now Maeser.

During construction of Maeser Chapel in 1929 Mr. Murray took a very active part financially. They had to raise $3,000 so Mr. Murray and his committee held an auction sale and raised $2, 200 of the $3,000 needed.

He is a retired farmer, stockman and sheepman. He ran cattle on Taylor Mountain for many years and in his early years he did threshing for many residents of the valley.

Since retiring at the age of 65 he took much pride in raising a garden every year which he shared with his many friends.

William married first Beatrice Maniellie Howarth Oct. 22, 1901. Their son, Clarence James Murray died in 1966 and their daughter Manellie (Nellie) Marie Murray Reich died in 1974.

On November 9, 1909 he married Emma Estella Woodruff. Their daughter, Clara Margaret Murray, died in 2008.

Emma Elizabeth Hughes (Gardiner) married William March 21, 1914 in Vernal, Utah.
