Daniel J. Shumpert, 61, of Gilbert, co-founder of the Hidden Valley Country Club and former owner of Shumpert's Food City of West Columbia, died Friday in the Lexington County Hospital. Born in Lexington County, he was a son of the late Daniel J. and Pinkie Shealy Shumpert. Mr. Shumpert was a former president and life member of the Retail Grocery Association. He was also a member of the Sinclair Lodge 154 AFM, Jamil Shrine, chairman of the Westside Baptist Church and World War II veteran. Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Louise Thomas Shumpert; a daughter, Mrs. David Hopkins of Gaffney; a son, Danny Shumpert of Columbia; three sisters, Mrs. Lelia Backman of Lexington, Mrs. Ester Crumpton of South Congaree and Mrs. Vontay Steele of California; four brothers, Baron B. Shumpert of Cayce, Tyson Shumpert of West Columbia, Knowlton Shumpert of North and Shafter Shumpert of Pelion; and two grandchildren. Services will be 3 p.m. Monday at Westside Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Wallace W. Rogers and the Rev. Clayton Shumpert. Burial will be in Southland Memorial Gardens.
