Marie Haslem Russon
1927 - 2019

Early Life: Marie was born April 19, 1927, to John Henry and Rebecca Alice Hartle Haslem, in Bennett, Utah, in a log cabin built by her dad on the family farm. Marie was baptized a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints when she was eight years old. She comes from a legacy of family who are stable and hard-working in the community. Marie would tell her children how her family only had one day per week where they could play with friends for just a few hours. The rest of the time was spent doing chores and working on the farm. She and her siblings got to have one bath per week on Saturday. The boys would go down to the creek and fill up a number three washtub and bring it back to the cabin for baths. The girls bathed first, then the boys bathed last. How life has changed since then!
Life’s Work | Service | Interests: When she grew up, Marie left her home in Bennett to attend Brigham Young University. She told her posterity that as she was saying goodbye, her mother stood on the porch crying; that was over 70 years ago. Marie's loved ones are sure there was a sweet reunion with her mother after she passed away. At BYU, she graduated with a Bachelor of Science [sic] degree in secretarial practice in June 1949. Following his mission, Marie married Wendell Gerald Russon on October 23, 1950, in the Salt Lake Temple; they were later divorced. This union brought six children, two of which were stillborn. Marie was a checkwriter at Geneva Steel Company as well as a secretary at Edgemont Elementary School in Provo, and Geneva Elementary School in Orem. Before she retired, she worked at Beehive Clothing in Orem and developed some wonderful friendships there. She loved just being at home and missed this when she went into the hospital and to Aspen Ridge. Later in life, she lost her ability to walk and used a walker during those difficult years. Marie served in many callings in the Church, including: Primary president, stake Relief Society board, and loved doing genealogy work. She never sought the limelight, but was a humble lady who sought to live the Gospel she embraced. Marie was as consistent in life as the rising sun. You could always depend on her. Marie Haslem Russon, a resident of Orem for most of her life, passed away peacefully at Aspen Ridge of Utah Valley on the evening of May 29, 2019. She was 92.

As her children and grandchildren, we honor her for the legacy she leaves and for the wonderful life she lived. She will go to a great reward. Our hearts are full as we say our final goodbye to Mom – may God bless her until we meet again."
