Well known Woman Crossed the Plains in 1861
The funeral of Mrs. Rebecca J. Marrs, a well-known pioneer woman of this city, who died at the family home on Twelfth and Harrison streets Wednesday morning, was conducted at the family residence Thursday, Rev. J.R. Landsborough officiating.
Mrs. Marrs was born in Terra Haute, Indiana in 1834, and at the age of 25 years was married to Samuel Marrs, of Fort Smith, Arkansas. In 1861, Mr. and Mrs. Marrs crossed the plains by ox team, making the trip in six months. They came to Oregon City, making their home in this city ever since.
There were eleven children born to Mr. and Mrs. Marrs, three of whom are dead. Those surviving are Mrs. William A. Curry, of Junction City, Oregon; Mrs. S.C. Berry of Woodburn, Oregon; Charles G. Marrs of Seattle, Wash.; Mrs. D.F. Whiteman, Mrs. W.T. Smith, Miss Rosa and Miss Georgia, all of this city; Mrs. Fannie J. Neppach, of Portland. Mr. Marrs died in this city six years ago.
