J.D. HOWELL, FORMER LOCAL MAN, PASSES
J.D. Howell, 75, who came to Oregon City by ox team in 1869, died on Tuesday morning in Corvallis, where he had engaged in the drug business for a number of years. Born in Viney Grove, Arkansas, on February 2, 1862, he came to Oregon City with his parents in 1869 and remained here until 1883 when he moved to Corvallis.

He was married to Sadie D. Horning in Corvallis on Sept. 19, 1894, to whom seven children were born, four surviving---Mrs. Robert (Mary) Gates of Corvallis, Mrs. Martha Raab of Seattle, Wa.; William and Robert Howell of Corvallis.

He also leaves his widow, Sadie Howell; one sister and two brothers, Miss Mary Howell of Gladstone, E.E. Howell of Jefferson, and Chambers Howell of Gladstone. The late E.M. Howell of this city also was a brother. He also leaves several grandchildren and nephews, and other relatives in this city.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday afternoon in Corvallis.

Jefferson Davis Howell married his first wife, Lizzie D. Hemphill on May 17, 1891 and she died on February 23, 1892.


Leonard George Howell born Nov. 16, 1907 and died Sept. 16, 1913.

Davis Hamilton Howell born May 4, 1895 and died April 12, 1914 age 18 from pneumonia related to the measles.

Lewis Horning Howell- born Jan. 26, 1897, died Dec. 28, 1915 when he was accidently killed by a falling tree at age 18, 11 mos., 2 days.

E.M. Howell, of this city and Chambers Howell of Gladstone, received news Wednesday morning of the sudden death of their nephew, Lewis Howell, son of Mr. and Mrs. Davis Howell, at Corvallis. Death was due to an accident, the nature of which was not stated in the telegram.

About two years ago Mr. and Mrs. Howell lost a son through an accident when he was run over by a wood wagon and one year ago a second son died after a short illness.

Mr. Howell was a former resident of this city, he is the son of Mrs. Martha Howell of Gladstone (and Dr. Squire Davis Howell who died in 1894) Both are well known pioneers of Oregon.

Relatives left Wednesday afternoon to attend the funeral to be held at Corvallis today.
