Lifelong Goodland, KS resident Shirley Mae Hayden, 90, passed away on Tuesday, September 11, 2018 at the Via Christi Village in Hays, KS, where she had been residing since January, 2018.

Shirley was born in Goodland on December 11, 1927 to William Henry (Hank) and Lenna (Miller) Walker. She was the third of five children; Robert, Norman (Joe), Shirley, William (Bunkie) and Bonnie Carlton. Shirley graduated from Sherman County High School in 1945. She then went on and attended Fort Hays State Teacher’s College from 1945-1947.

On September 3, 1949, Shirley married Joseph Dale Hayden in Raton, New Mexico. To this union, three children, Shyrl, Susan and Bill were born.

Shirley worked for many years as a legal secretary for Tom Ogilvie Law Firm, First Insurance Agency and as a secretary for Goodland High School. She also worked as a bookkeeper at the Goodland Greenhouse and for Cowboy Loop. She volunteered on the Sherman County Cemetery Board for 25 years, NWK Hospital Gift Shop, Red Cross Blood Drives and was a mentor to 3rd grade students at West School in the reading program.

Preceding her in death were her parents, all 4 siblings, her husband of 64 years and two grandsons, Gary Lynn Luea and Levi Hayden.

She is survived by her children; Shryl (Gary) Luea of Ellis, Kansas, Susan (Charles) Hall of Salina, Kansas, and Bill (Ronda) Hayden of Hays, Kansas. She is also survived by 5 grandchildren Zach (Emily) Luea of Overland Park, KS, Shane Hall (Lindsey Martin) of Lindsborg, KS, Josh (Erin) Luea of Hoover, AL, Brandon (Sara) Hayden of Colorado Springs, CO, and Shala (Arron) Koelzer of Olathe, KS; ten great grandchildren, MacKenzie Hall, Hunter Hall, Isabela Hall, Bayden Koelzer, Grayson Koelzer, Andrew Luea, Avery and Jocelyn Luea, Will Hayden and DeLaney Luea.

First and foremost, she was a Mom, Grandma and Great Grandma. Her greatest joy was family gatherings at the holidays.
