It was reported in the newspapers that Harold was drowned in the Hudson River opposite the New York Orphan Asylum in Hastings-on-Hudson while out swimming with friends on Sunday afternoon. Harold was living with his family in Greenwich Village at the time. The boys had trolleyed to Hastings.
The newspaper reported that he was an excellent swimmer and far from shore when a thunderstorm squall came. His friends could not reach him before he went under. His body was recovered floating in the water in Yonkers on Wednesday morning.
Neither the prayer card, nor the gravestone, shows his middle name spelled out, just middle initial "J". His middle name may have been James after his father and both grandfathers.
