A BEE RIDGE WOMAN IS DEAD
Mrs. Rowena Mitchell, 85, Daugther of Pioneers, Buried Tuesday.

Mrs. Rowena Mitchell, who was a daughter of pioneers of Knox County, being the second child of the Rev. Samuel Murphy and Eleanor Murphy, died Saturday evening in LaBelle. She had been in failing health some years and more rapidly so of late. She was past 85 years of age, having been born May 27, 185.8 Burial was in the Bee Ridge cemetery on the family lot, services being held at the Bee Ridge Church, which is near by to her girlhood home that use to be, and of which she became a member in early life. The services were conducted by the Rev. O. B. Hobbs, present pastor of the church.
Four children survive. They are Samuel G. Mitchell, who lives in the same old home neighborhood; Lida K., Mrs. Sam Sanderson, of LaBelle, with whom she had lived for a number of years and where death came; John H. Mitchell, Powell, Wyo., and Roda E., Mrs. Guy Triplett, of Kansas City. There are also eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews, and other relatives. She leaves two sisters, Mary Kate, Mrs. George C. Cannon, of Rapatee, Il., and Emma, Mrs. Wilmer Cater, of Moberly, Mo. An only brother, Robert H. Murphy died some years ago.
As Miss Rowena Augusta Murphy, Mrs. Mitchell came from a parsonage home, the Rev. Samuel Murphy being a Methodist preacher of the early day, to marry William Thomas Mitchell, later known as Judge Mitchell for his having served as county judge on Sept. 7, 1876, and he himself being a son of a man who had been ordained a minister of the Methodist Church.
His father was Hartwell H. Mitchell, and the son, Thomas Mitchell, was one of ten children. After their marriage Mr. and Mrs. Mitchell went to live on a farm near her parents' home. Later this home, built by the Reverend Murphy, who died May 17, 1892, and known as one of the land marks of Bee Ridge and quite a beautiful one for years, was to be their home. Here they lived for years, and by that time Judge Mitchell himself became one of the well-to-do farmers and livestock breeders of Knox County. He died in February, 1918. The old home was torn down a few years ago.
This former Murphy home of "Uncle Sam'' and "Aunt Ellen" as better known by relatives and friends when they lived there, and afterward in Knox City to her death, was one of four homes of four of a family settling in this section, she being the only sister of three brothers, who at one time lived there: Henry Shultz, from whose farm came a part of the church cemetery; the afterward Judge Sylvester Shultz home east and on the north side of the road, and that of Cyrus Shultz, across the road south of it. As one might say all lived on the four corners.
Mrs. Mitchell was a cousin of the mother of F. E. Schofield, editor of The Edina Sentinel, she being a daughter of Henry Shultz, his grandfather.
Coming as she did from such close connection with the church, it was said of Mrs. Mitchell that to her religion was not a form, but a living reality, and her Bible was always near at hand. She was member of the LaBelle Chapter of the O. E. S.
