Obituary: Martha Cooling Smith was born in Rockford, Illinois on December 30, 1913, the 7th child of Wilfred B. and Marvia Needham Cooling. Death due to diabetes while at Nursing Home in Dallas, Texas, early on the morning of October 8, 2003. Her husband, Stuart Smith, predeceased her and is buried in Florida where she desires her remains to be sent. She leaves a son, William Herrick, three grandsons and granddaughter, Michele Rench of Arlington, Texas; and three great-grandchildren. Martha's siblings were Marsh, Agnes, Clement, Laurence, Joseph, Theresa, Wilfred, all of whom are deceased, leaving only Clotilde Cooling, at a Nursing Home in Irving, Texas and the youngest Cooling, Barbara Halsey, of Irving, widow. Her father, Wilfred B. Cooling, was born in Rockford one year after the Civil War and died in Rockford in 1957 - a lifelong resident. He set up the WB Cooling and Sons Upholstery Shop on Morgan Street and was a well-known citizen, recognized as a bibliophile. Martha was much admired for her generosity and superior homemaking skills. A memorial service will be held at the Eastgate Funeral Home in Garland, Texas on October 15, at noon.
