Obituary
John Gates departed this life at 11 AM August 31, 1891, aged 55 years, 4 months and 15 days.

Mr. Gates was born in Monroe County, O., April 16, 1836. He was married to Rachel A Anderson of the same county and state, May 12, 1859. To this union was born one son. (Seigel Gates 1863). Death summoned the wife and mother to rest, leaving the father and son to wend their way alone. On Feb. 12, 1865, Mr. Gates was united in marriage with Miss Lottie McGraw of Ohio county, W. Va. To this union four daughters were born, three of whom are left to comfort the wife and mother in her great sorrow. Mr. Gates became a member of the Christian church at the age of 15, and during all the years that followed maintained an upright, Christian character. He served as an elder in the Ohio congregation for some years before coming to Indiana. Having located in this town in 1866, he took membership with the Christian church, of which he was soon made an elder, which office he filled up to the time of his death, with that faithfulness which always characterized his life. Bro. Gates was honest in his convictions, a good citizen, kind neighbor, true friend a loving father and devoted Christian. The bereaved family have our sympathy in their deep affliction.
