CASH GATES BURIED IN HEBRON
The death of C. M. Gates, who died in Oakland, Calif., and was buried in Hebron Cemetery on Sunday afternoon, breaks another link in the chain of pioneer characters emblazoning the history of this community.
Sixty-four years ago, Mr. Gates and family became part of the Ohio contingent locating at Hebron. Mr. Gates attained local distinction as a fisherman, a hunter with keen marksmanship and a successful farmer. He was outstanding as a raiser of garden truck which always found a ready market. His genial nature won for him many friends who will cherish his memory.
Cassius M. Gates was born at Captana (sic), Ohio, October 27, 1852, and died at the home of his son, Fred Gates in Oakland, Calif., April 6th, 1945 at the age of 92 years, 5 months and 10 days.
Mr. Gates and his wife and son, Walter, came to Hebron from Ohio in the spring of 1881, and settled on a farm three miles north of Hebron. Here three children were born -- Charlie, Edward and Fred.
In 1892, Mr. and Mrs. Gates and family moved to another farm one mile northwest of Hebron where they resided until the death of Mrs. Gates in 1938. Mr. Gates then went to Oakland, Calif., to live with his sons, Edward and Fred Gates.
He leaves to mourn his departure, three sons, Walter of Hastings, Nebr., Edward of San Francisco, Calif. and Fred of Oakland, Calif. One son, Charlie preceded him in death. Also, left to mourn his death are two granddaughters, Maxine Dale Unland of Hollywood, Calif. and La Veve Farbes of West Palm Beach, Fla., two grandsons, Walter and Charles of Boston, Mass., one great-granddaughter, Lavina Jane Unland of Oakland, Calif. and a host of friends both in California and Hebron.
Mr. Gates was a brother of the late Mrs. F.J. Hendershot and cousin of the late A.C. Ring, prominent pioneers of Hebron.
Funeral services were conducted by Rev. Gann of the Christian Church at Hill's Mortuary at two o'clock Sunday afternoon. Burial was in the family lot in Hebron Cemetery.
