State's First Farm Leader Succumbs
Lowville ~ (AP) ~ Frederick C. Schraub, 82, New York State's first commissioner of agriculture, died yesterday of a heart attack in Brigham Hall Sanitarium, Canandaigua, where he had been a patient since 1928.
Schraub was a member of the Lewis County Bar Association for 61 years. He was appointed commissioner of agriculture by Govenor Roswoll P. Flower of Watertown in 1893.
He was a delegate to the Democratic National Convention five times and was chairman of the convention when William Jennings Bryan was nominated for the presidency.
Schraub was a candidate for lieutenant governor in 1896. In 1884 he wa district attorney of Lewis County.
Funeral services will be held Sunday in Lowville where he was born and where his widow resides.
