1897 Lowville Journal and Republican

Henry Schraub, one of the oldest and best known residents of Lowville, died Sunday morning. Mr. Schraub came to this country as a political refugee in the political revolution in Germany in 1848. His birth place was at Frankfort on-the Main in Hesse Cassel, now a part of Germany. In his native land Mr. Schraub was brought up as a gentleman receiving a liberal education, and was employed in a large publishing house in Frankfort. He had little means when he came to this country as he fled from Germany in the revolution in a hurry. He picked
up the trade of a barber on the ship and in New York. In the spring of 1851 he came to Lowville from Rome and opened a shop, which he carried on until about 1881s. being for many years the only barber in this section, and more widely known than almost any resident of that time. Mr. Schraub was united
in marriage to Salome Laden burgh in 1853, who survives him,and by whom he had four children, Henry, who died at
the age of 15 years in 1860; Hon. Fred C Schraub and Mrs. Minnie S. Jones, of Lowville, and Mrs. Anna Kelly, wife
of Dr. J. D. Kelly, of Providence, R. I. Mr. Schraub acquired a competency at his business, and since his retirement in
18811 he has led a quiet life. He was in his 75th year, having been born in November, 1822
