The peaceful sabbath morning had just come over the earth on February 19th, 1933, when the soul of Alpha Robert Crandall took its flight to the God whom he loved.
Born in McKean County, Pennsylvania August 5th, 1852, Grandpa Crandall, as he was lovingly called by many of his friends and relatives, was born to Tyrannus and Clarice. He lived a long life of 80 years, 6 months and 14 days. When he was a small boy his parents moved to Jones County, Iowa, and a few years later to Calhoun County, Iowa, near Manson. Here on December 30th, 1875, he was united in marriage to Jane Elizabeth Jones who traveled life's journey with him until a few years ago, when she passed away. In 1883 they moved to the homestead in Afton township in Sanborn County, South Dakota. Six years later they moved back to Calhoun County, Iowa, then to Hull in Sioux County, Iowa. February 22, 1900, they moved back to the homesead in South Dakota, where he has since lived except for a short time in California.
Nine children came to this home: Lela, (Mrs. Ira Gould) of Fairview, Montana, who died in 1918; Bertha, who died at age 3 from typhoid fever; Louie (Mrs. Ora van Deusen) of Raymondville, Missouri; Leslie and Arthur of Artesian, on the homestead; Lorena, (Rena, Mrs. Alpha Deming) of Fedora, S. Dak; Elbra, (Mrs. Frank Tompkins) of Chester, South Dakota; Mrs. Clara Reeves (Elzie Reeves) who died Sept. 2, 1916; Alta, (Mrs. Emery Reeves) of Vancouver, Washington.
Besides his sons and daughters surviving him are, one sister, Mrs. Emma Clow, of Rockwell City, Iowa; three brothers, Herbert, of Grandview, Washington; Julius, of Bakersfield, Calif. and Earl of Long Beach, California, and his many grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Early in life Grandpa Crandall became a Christian, joining the Methodist church while living in Hull, Iowa. The influence of this step was manifest all through his life. His kind disposition, his Cristian faith, and his honest integrity made him such a man that his friends could find no word to say against him. He lived on the homestead with Leslie and his family after his wife died.
He will be missed by his family and by the little group of Christian people who gather for worship every sunday at 2 o'clock and on Thursday evening for service at the Crandall schoolhouse. . . .
