Thomas McCormick was born in Warsaw Twp., Jefferson Co., Pennsylvania, 28 April 1843, to Thomas and Jane Brice McCormick.
He and his mother lived with his older sister Jane and her husband George Wilson (1850 U. S. Census, Warsaw) after his father was killed in an accident. Their family soon began a journey West. Thomas married Georgianna Andrews in Prairie, Mower Co. Minnesota 10 December 1868.
After a time in Minnesota, the McCormicks, Wilsons, and Andrews families traveled on through Missouri to Kansas. They farmed for a period in Lincoln and Ellis Counties (1875 Kansas State Census and 1880 Saline Twp. Ellis Co., Kansas). The Wilsons and his mother remained in Kansas when the other families crossed the plains about 1882 -- ending in Clackamas and Multnomah Counties, Oregon. Thomas and Georgianna left her family and moved to LaGrande, Union County. He was head sawyer at a mill there.
Next move was to Klamath County where Thomas owned Keno property, stock, timber, a sawmill, and the sternwheeler "Mayflower" that carried supplies up the Klamath River to Klamath Falls. It was replaced with the "Canby" about 1904. In 1906, he sold land and water rights to the federal government for the reclamation project that would benefit farmers in the area. He installed the first electric light plant in 1907.
Thomas died in Keno 22 Nov. 1929, and Georgianna died in Klamath Co. 8 July 1930. (Klamath County Deed books, marriage records, newspaper clippings, and history books contain a great deal of information on the McCormick family).
From McCormick published 2001:
“July 1887, was the beginning of an era of McCormick activity in Keno, Klamath Co., Oregon, that grew in momentum year by year. A sawmill was purchased, logs were cut, steamboats loaded, babies born, farms started, schools built, electric lights lit, hotels opened, and a flurry of weddings occurred . . . one after another . . . as eight pretty daughters of Thomas and Georgianna Andrews McCormick embarked on their separate journeys.
When the era ended . . . the McCormick name in Klamath County ended. Their four sons produced three boys who might have carried the McCormick family name forward; but none had a son. Now, the only apparent monuments to this pioneer family, who played a prominent role in the development of the county, are a few old gravestones and a lone street sign in Keno bearing the name “McCormick Road.”
