Thomas McCormick was born 17 January 1795, in Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania — a son of John and Sarah Sloan McCormick, Westmoreland County pioneers. He married 15 February 1816, in Westmoreland County to Jane Brice, born 14 September 1799, daughter of James and Ann Brice. Several of their children were born in Westmoreland County — where they lived for about 17 years.

They moved their family to Jefferson County, Pennsylvania around 1832. Though the distance wasn’t great, it was a long hard journey from Westmoreland County to Jefferson County and even more difficult when they arrived. The following description of the early years in Jefferson County is taken from McCormick:
“Trees needed to be cut or dug out; debris burned; log cabins built; and farm land plowed — all without the benefit of modern tools. It took strong men like Thomas and his brothers to do the backbreaking work. Thomas, aged only forty-nine, lost his life while digging a well. A large boulder broke loose . . . striking his head. Jane, his wife of twenty-eight years, was left with several minor children to raise when he died in 1844. His body rests in Temple cemetery near where they lived in Warsaw Township — an appropriate resting place because Thomas McCormick and Isaac Temple first came there in 1832, to search for home sites. They brought their families and belongings the following spring.”

A short poem from Jefferson County Pennsylvania pays tribute to the pioneering spirit of these early settlers:
This is the land our fathers loved,
The homesteads which they toiled to win.
This is the ground whereon they moved,
And here are the graves they slumber in.
