BIOGRAPHY:

JOSEPH 'JOE' ARIMATHEA ORNDORFF was born June 02, 1854 to David Thomas Orndorff and Elizabeth (Eliza) Strowsnyder as their firstborn. Known siblings include: Hezekiah Claggett; Simon H.; Hannah Frances; twins Algernon 'Allen Jernon' Sidney and Lucille 'Lucy' Ann Orndoff. Ten half-brothers from David and Isabella (Racey) Orndorff (David's first marriage)

1860 census misenumerated Joseph's name as 'Arimathea Orndorff' a female. He was 4 years old (birth year about 1856). Birth place was recorded as 'Virginia' and his home in 1860 was District 1, Hardy, Virginia with the Post Office in Wardensville. Family members were father David Orndorff (71), mother Eliza A Orndorff (38), younger brothers Hezekiah Orndorff (2), and Simon H Orndorff (1).

In late 1869 - early 1870, Joseph's mother Eliza had died and his elderly father was unable to care for the children. All of the children were 'adopted' out. Joseph, 16, was taken in by Joseph A. and Susan Bedinger, Capon, Hardy, West Virginia. Living next door to Joseph is foster parents John and Nancy Bedinger with Joseph's brother and sister, Hezekiah and Lucy Orndorf. Simon went on to be in the care of the Overseer's of the Poor. Lucy's twin, Algernon 'Allen' was taken to Kansas where he grew up. Hannah was taken in by her half-brother Harrison.

In 1880, Joseph Orndorff was living in Mineral County, WV, next door to his brother Simon and near brother Hezekiah.

Joe moved across the border from West Virginia into Cumberland, Allegany County, Maryland with his siblings Hezekiah and Hannah. Joe, as well as his brother Hezekiah, worked for the railroad.

Joe married the first time to Mary Elizabeth Munnett in 1876. Children from this marriage union: Jenny L. Orndorff; and George Walter Orndorff (George William / AKA: George Walter is the same). Mary Elizabeth Munnet Orndorff died sometime before 1884.

Joe, a widower, married a second time to Mary Savage in 1884. Children born to the marriage union of Joseph and Mary Savage: Nellie Catherine, Elizabeth E. 'Bessie', William Walter, Mathilda "Maggie", and John F.

Joe was a registered voter in 1890 for the Sixth Election District, Allegany County, Maryland. ("10-6-90 Orndroff, Joseph, white, sworn, age 31; place of birth Hardy County, West Virginia; residence Old Pike; in county 14 months; in Election District 9 months. Qualified voter surname Orndroff; christian name Joseph. Filed in the clerk's office of the Circuit Court for Allegany County October 21, 1890)

On July 22, 1901, Joe's daughter Jenny, 18, died of diptheria in Ekheart, Allegany, Maryland. Joe's second wife, Mary Savage Orndorff, died two years later on September 10, 1903 in Cumberland, Allegany County, Maryland.

On February 17, 1904, Joe's daughter Elizabeth 'Bessie', 17, married Hannah's brother-in-law (Michael Dominiack) in Frostburg, Allegany County, Maryland.

When Joe's sister Hannah (Orndorf) Dominiack, and his daughter Bessie (Orndorf) Dominiack, moved to Chamberlain, Brule County, South Dakota in January 1909 where their husbands obtained land, Joe also moved to South Dakota as a widower, where he worked as a laborer for the city until his death in May, 1917.

FUNERAL HOME: Hickey-Wevik Funeral Home, 215 S. Main Street, P.O. Box 207, Chamberlain, SD 57325: 'We have looked through our records and cannot find any information on Joseph. They have a death certificate for him at the courthouse, but we are not finding any information on his location of burial. There is no burial permit or anything. The records here are VERY sketchy prior to 1947. We are the only funeral home ever to have been here, so the records of most things would be here if they were recorded at the time." (Emails, phone conversation February 11, 2009, at cemetery office in person.)

DATE OF BURIAL: May 14, 1917 at Riverview Cemetery, according to Death Certificate. I was unable to locate a headstone upon searching the cemetery. Possibly buried next to his sister Hannah Frances Orndorff Dominiack in one of the two unmarked graves in her lot - Section B (actually is Section D), Block 46
