Richard was the youngest of seven children born to Martha Marie (Bierman) and Albert Friedrich Belling. Sometime after 1941 he married Mary Louise Hopfensberger, who preceded him in death in 1982.

Richard died in 1997 but is not buried with his wife. It is unknown why he rests in Riverside Cemetery and not with her.
