Henry Clay Clayton, son of Benjamin and Sarah Clayton, was born near Bedford, Lawrence County, Indiana, May 5, 1845; he was one of a family of nine children.

Mr. Clayton came to Iowa with his parents the eighth day of October in the years 1853. They located on this farm where he has spent his entire life since coming to Iowa with the exception of two winters which he spent in the west. His father bought several hundred acres of land in this vicinity for $1.25 an acre. Their first log cabin was located where the big birch tree now stands.

Mr. Clayton was united in marriage to Sarah J. Roberts on the 21st day of July in the year 1878. Eight children were born to this union. His wife and six of the children survive him. The children are George Blaine of Des Moines; Bertha May of Van Meter; Jerry Clay of Casey; Benjamin Harrison of Van Meter; John Henry of Dallas Center; and Roy Alfred of Van Meter. All of the children were at his bedside when death came. There were two daughters who passed away in infancy.

He is also survived by twenty-three grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Four grandchildren and one great grandchild preceded him in death.

The funeral service was held at his home on Tuesday, Feb. 28th conducted by Rev. S. C. Peterson. Interment was in Clayton Cemetery.
