Roy Alfred Clayton died Dec. 12, 1981 at Story County Hospital's long-term care unit. He was 87.

Clayton was born Jan. 24, 1894 to Henry C. Clayton and Sarah J. Roberts.

He was married Nov. 5, 1916 to Doris E. Payton. They farmed southeast of Van Meter on the H. C. Clayton estate for 30 years, raising their family.

In 1936, the purchased the Warren Payton farm and moved there in 1946.

Doris died Aug. 14, 1959.

Clayton served on the Van Meter School Board, United Methodist Church board, election board and Izaac Walton League. He was a Van Meter Township trustee for 30 years. He was a member of the United Methodist Churchin Van Meter for 65 years.

He was married April 15, 1965 to Ethel Reigle Golightly. She died May 6, 1981.

The first child was born to Roy and Doris, Theresa, died in infancy. He is survived by five children: J. A Clayton of St. Paul; Wanda Phillips of Ranchita, Calif.; Esther Ramsbeck of Glenwood, Minn.; Phyllis Linn of Nevada, Iowa, and Randall Clayton of Van Meter. He also is survived by a stepson, Dale Golightly of Booneville; 14 grandchildren and 15 grandchildren, and one brother, John Clayton of Slater, Mo.
