Services are scheduled Tuesday for
Toney Adkins, 73 of Michigan Avenue, East Liverpool, Columbiana Co., Ohio
who died at 1:05 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 16, 1991,
in the emergency room of East Liverpool's City Hospital
where he was taken after being stricken with an apparent
heart attack at home.
He was born March 28, 1917 in Palermo, Lincoln Co. West Virginia,
a son of the late
Ezra Albert Adkins
&
Flora Jane (Stowers) Adkins.
The president of the East Liverpool Convalescent Center,
Mr. Adkins was a liscensed nursing home administrator.
He was a member of the Ohio Health Care Association
and served as president of the Columbiana County Nursing Home Association and the North East Ohio District of Nursing Homes.
He had been in the Nursing industry since Feb 22, 1961,
when he opened Geraldine's Nursing Home at No. 2 Thompson Place.
He replaced that facility with
The East Liverpool Convalescent Center No. 1
on Armstrong Lane April 27, 1966.
The East Liverpool Convalescent Center No. 2
was built in 1975.
He served with the Merchant Marine during World War II,
and with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers from 1946-47.
He was employed 15 years as a crane and charger machine operator at the former Crucible Steel Co.
He was a journeyman carpenter and former member of the Carpenter's Union, and was a partner in the Adkins Furniture Store in East End.
At one time, he was a member of the Junior Chamber of Commerce.
Mr. Adkins served 20 years on the East Liverpool Board of Health, where he was chairman for 10 years.
He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints since 1928, and was president of the East Liverpool Branch when the church was built in Calcutta in 1958.
An elder of the church, he was a former Sunday school superintendent and teacher.
He had served many years on the District High Council of church, and was president of the Elders Quorum.
He also had served as president of the former Klondyke School Parent-Teacher Association, and as president of the 10 Star Club of the Advance Aluminum Casting Corporation of America.
Survivors include;
his wife,
Geraldine Mae (Pearson) Adkins,
whom he married Aug. 17, 1941:
a daughter,
Mrs. Stanley (Janice) Bowden of Calcutta;
a son,
Kenneth Richard Adkins of East Liverpool;
seven grandchildren.
Elders of the church are to conduct the services at 3:30 p.m. in the Dawson Funeral Home.
Burial is to be in Riverview Cemetery.
