William E. Adkins, 74, died Tuesday, Sept. 17, 2002, in South Bend. He was a resident of Mechanicsburg, Pa.

He was born Oct. 7, 1927, in Squib, Ky. His parents were Virgil and Leana (Wells) Adkins. He married Mary M. Harper on April 1, 1950. She survives. Other survivors include two sons, Danny Adkins of Newport News, Va., and Gary Adkins of Dillsburg, Pa.; two daughters, Judith Hatton of Center Moriches, N.Y., and Mary Lynn Fishback of Bremen; five brothers, Lee Adkins of Kentucky and Charles, Buell, Lawrence and Sherman Adkins, all of Indiana; three sisters, Grace Whitaker of Kentucky and Edith Boggs and Beulah Bullock, both of Indiana; and seven grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Victor and James Adkins.

He was employed by the Federal Aviation Administration in Long Island, N.Y., as an electrical engineer, retiring in 1982.

He was a member of Country and Town Baptist Church in Mechanicsburg, Pa., where he served as a Sunday school teacher and a deacon. He volunteered at the Shoshonee National Park in Cody, Wyo., and was a member of The Gideons International. He enjoyed traveling.

He was a U.S. Army and Air Force veteran.

The Rev. Steve Fair will conduct a service at 7 tonight at Fair Haven Christian Church in Trafalgar. Friends may call from 6 p.m. until time of service today at the church. Burial will be at Fort Indiantown Gap National Cemetery in Fort Indiantown Gap, Pa. Flinn and Maguire Funeral Home in Franklin is handling arrangements.
