THE EVENING HERALD, KLAMATH FALLS, OREGON
WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 5, 1919

Hands that for more than two score years have been identified with every
forward movement of the community were folded in eternal rest, when Mrs. Ella
Anderson Applegate, wife of Captain O.C. Applegate, died at 8 o'clock this
morning, after an illness of two month's duration. A devoted family's loss is
shared by the friends scattered widely throughout the community. The passing of
the pioneer woman marks a distinct loss and will be the cause of widespread
sympathy and grief. Arrangements for the funeral service will be announced
later.
Ella Anderson Applegate was born October 13, 1855, near Phoenix, Jackson
county, Oregon, being the oldest daughter of Rev. Jesse Marion Anderson, a
pioneer Methodist minister. Being left an orphan at 9 years of age, she secured
an education in the public schools of her community largely by her own efforts,
and later taught school in Jackson county,.
On Christmas day, 1878, she was united in marriage to Captain O.C. Applegate
and the couple came immediately to Klamath county, where was one of the earliest
employes of the Klamath Indian agency. During a married life of forty-one years
they have made their home in this county, where they have been closely
identified with its development and progress.
Mrs. Applegate had been for years a member of the Christian Church and was
active in the work of the local congregation. She has been found at all times
loyal to the highest ideals and willing to assist to the extent of her strength
in every useful cause. Many warm friend testify to her perfect unselfishness
and devotion to her family, neighbors and community.
She is survived by her husband and six children- Frank L. of Medford, Roy G.
of Berkeley (Cal.), Oliver C. of Sacramento (Cal.), Annie M of Kodiak (Alaska),
Rachael E., a teacher in the local high school and Jean M. of King City (Cal.)
All were privileged to be with their mother during her last illness, except the
oldest daughter, who was unable to return from Alaska.
Her surviving brothers and sisters are G.G. Anderson of Dairy, F.M. Anderson
of Berkeley (Cal.), Mrs. Jas. Reynolds of Fort Jones (Cal.), Mrs. G.W. Loosley
and Mrs. J.M. Wagner of Ashland (Ore.) and Mrs. Geo. S. Nickerson of Sacramento.
