Funeral for Leroy Gilbert Applegate, 13522 Oatfield Rd., Milwaukie, will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Peake Memorial Chapel. Vault interment will follow. Mr. Applegate died Nov. 18 at his home following a long illness. Mr. Applegate, 81, a member of the pioneer Applegate family of Southern Oregon, was born at Olene, Ore., Aug. 19, 1885. He lived at Olene until his marriage to Mildred E. Bette at The Dalles in 1910. He attended the University of Oregon where he played football. Mr. Applegate moved to Portland in 1918 where he became a construction engineer and superintendent of building for the original Portland International Airport. He also supervised construction of Franklin Bowl and the Rim Road at Crater Lake National Park. Following his retirement from the construction industry, Mr. Applegate spent 10 years as a detective for the Pinkerton Agency. Survivors include the widow, Mildred, Milwaukie; two daughters, Mrs. Sam C. Eggiman, Redwood City Calif., and Ms. Emil Becker, Milwaukie; a brother, Oliver C., Oakland, Calif.; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. (The Oregonian, 22 Nov 1966)
