Gilbert was barely 14 years old when his parents died. His uncle Eli Anderson took three of the children and other relatives cared for the others. Gilbert assumed his responsibilities for the family and started working. In 1872, when he was twenty he came to Linkville, Klamath County to work as a buckaroo for O.C. Applegate, his brother-in-law. He worked at Klamath Indian Agency, learned to speak their language and wrote a phoenetic book translating their language into English.
March 8, 1893, in Bly, Oregon, when he was 40 years old, he married Lyda Maude Gardner Wiggins, a widow with two small children. They were married in Bly, Oregon. They made their first home on the property just across from the water wheel in Lost River in Olene. Three of their five children were born at home on that property; Ella, Jessie, and Emma.
In 1898, Gilbert and Lyda moved to Dairy and took up the operation of the stage-stop and rooming house. In Dairy, Mabel Eleanor, and George Gilbert were born to the Anderson's.
