As a boy, John emigrated from Pilsum, Germany in 1893 with his parents and siblings. He later married Maggie Bohlen, who had also emigrated Germany with her family as a child. They farmed in rural Kesley with their boys and one daughter: Harm, John "Taft", Fred, George, Jennette, Jake and Andrew. In their later years, they sold the "home place" to son, Fred. Freddy and Mabel owned the Haan farm for 40 more years, until they retired to Parkersburg.
John was preceded in death by his parents, his infant son John (1906), and also his adult son John Johnson "Taft" Haan.
KESLEY - Services for John H. Haan, 88, who died Friday evening at the home of his son, Jake, near Aplington, will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Hitesville Gospel Hall; burial in the Hitesville cemetery; survivors include his wife, Maggie; five sons, Harm, Fred and Jake, all of Aplington, George of Kesley and Andrew of Conrad; one daughter, Mrs. Floyd Birley of Aplington; 17 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren and three sisters, Mrs. Gertie Sietsma and Mrs. Minnie Hook of Wellsburg and Mrs. Ida Harms of Aplington; Engelkes Aplington Chapel in charge.
