Johanna came to America from Germany, on a ship named Gera, in 1893 with her husband, Jan G "John" Haan, and their first born children. They arrived at the Port of Baltimore, after that located to Iowa and eventually settled in Aplington, Butler Co. They had at least 9 children that survived to adulthood including:

Johanna's sister, Hindartja "Henrietta" TerViel also came to Aplington from Germany with her husband, Johann Muller and sons (Muller/Miller). Many of them are also interred in this cemetery. Another sister married Rient Ebbenga lived in Sibley Iowa. Her name was Katharina H. Terviel Ebbenga (1851-1924). One sister remained in Germany, Aeilke Terviel Strubbeck.
