via SAC:
William died at Antietam in the Cornfield. His parents, George Bowers and Eliza Atkinson Malone Bowers drove down there in a wagon to bring his body home for burial. William's brother, Charles Malone, was in the same unit and apparently was the one who wrote home to his parents about William's death. Charles was captured at the Wilderness and subsequently died at Salisbury Prison, North Carolina on December 26, 1864. Their brother, John Malone, is buried at Bedford Forge Cemetery near Yellow Creek.

William was buried in the Bowers lot at Yellow Creek, adjacent to his mother, Eliza Atkinson Malone Bowers. His was the first burial in Yellow Creek cemetery of a Bowers family member. Family stories are that George and Eliza Bowers took a wagon to Maryland to retrieve his body for burial. According to records, he served in Civil War, Co F 37th PA Vol Inf, 8th PA Reserves; he enlisted in Blair Co April 23, 1861 age 23, 5'7", blue eyes, dark hair, light complexion, miner. He was wounded at the Cornfield during the Battle of Antietam, Maryland. He died of his wounds and disease at Smoketon (aka Smoketown), Maryland on September 24, 1862. His parents would have received a letter about his death from someone in William's company. That letter would have taken 2 weeks to reach them, during which time William would have been buried in or near Smoketown, Maryland where the field hospital was located. When his parents arrived to pick up his body, it would have been exhumed for them to take home. It may have been his brother Charles or his brother John, who wrote that letter home since it seems that they were in the same company. Charles was wounded at the Wilderness on 8 May 1864, and he died on 26 December 1864 in Salisbury Prison, Rowan Co, North Carolina. John was captured and spent time at Andersonville Prison.
