True Republican, 18 January 1890

Oscar Schmoldt, supervisor of the town of Mayfield, died at his home, a little after ten o'clock, on Thursday evening, from pneumonia, in the 56th year of his age.

The deceased was a son of John and Wilhelmina Schmoldt, who were natives of Germany. They emigrated to America in 1830, settling in Pennsylvania. On the death of his father, Mrs. Schmoldt removed to Illinois, settling in Kane county in 1845, and in 1862 she came to DeKalb county and made her home in Mayfield where she died in 1870.

Oscar Schmoldt, the subject of this sketch, was the youngest of a family of eleven children. He was born in Schuylkill county, Pa., April 13, 1833. He lived at home until 19 years of age, meantime learning the carpenter's trade. He then went to California where he remained for six years. On his return from the Golden state, he remained at Geneva, Kane Co., about a year, then in the spring of 1862, he came to DeKalb county and settled on the farm in Mayfield, where he had since continuously resided.

He was married in 1866 to Miss Mary A. Townsend. Three children were born to them. William A., May, and one who died when an infant.

Mr. Schmoldt was a man much respected in the community, and a large circle of friends will deeply mourn his loss. A particularly sad feature of his death, and one that makes the blow doubly hard for his wife and daughter, is the fact that his death follows so closely upon their other sad bereavement, in the death of William, the only son and brother, which occurred on Thursday, just one week previous to the death of Mr. Schmoldt.

The funeral services will be held at the house this afternoon at one o'clock.
