A Victoria resident since 1968, moving from Hays, he worked for Kansas Refined Helium, Otis, for 30 years, retiring in 1995, and farmed south of Victoria. He was a member of St. Fidelis Catholic Church, Knight of Columbus, both of Victoria, and served four years on the Victoria USD 432 School Board.
On Nov. 23, 1953, he married Jeanette Pelzel at Hays. She survives.
Other survivors include: two sons, Bradley A., Great Bend, and Kevin J., of the home; five daughters, Pam Wellbrock, Victoria, Dee Dee Doerfler-Schmidt, Hays, Robin Schmidt, Albany, Ore., Shelly Johnson, Blacksburg, S.C., and Leslie Brown, of the home; his stepmother, Helen Brown, Victoria; six sisters, Ruth Rohr, Ellsworth, Frances Knoll, Lakewood, Colo., Carol Lou Keith, Penokee, Janie Tholen, Victoria, Kathy Striggow, Hill City, and Vera Kuhn, Hays; 15 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Terry Lee; a sister, Gladys Brown; an infant sister, Mary Brown; and a grandson, Jared Wellbrock.
Vigil will be at 7 p.m. Monday followed by a Knights of Columbus rosary at 7:30 p.m. at Cline's Mortuary, Victoria. Funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Fidelis Catholic Church, Victoria, with Father Frank X. Grinko, O.F.M. Cap., presiding. Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. today, 1 to 9 p.m. Monday and 8 to 9:30 a.m. Tuesday at Cline's Mortuary, Victoria. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Memorials may be sent to Hospice of Hays Medical Center or Ellis County Cancer Council, both in care of the mortuary.
