John Bloise, age 101 of Chemung St. Corning NY, passed away Sept. 20, 2014 at Three Rivers, surrounded by his family. John, known to many as 'BTO', was born June 4, 1913 in New Castle, Pennsylvania, the eldest of 8 children. John's parents, Antonio Bloise and Rose (Frank) Bloise, came through Ellis Island as youths from Italy.

Starting his first job at age 10, John worked 12 years in the produce business in New Castle, finishing school at grade 8 to help support the family. While visiting a brother working on a WPA project in Wellsboro PA, John met and married Gertrude Allen Boyce. After several short-term jobs, John went to work at Corning Glass Works where he remained for 36 years, retiring in 1977. While at CGW, John spent many years as a committeeman and Vice Pres. of Local 1000 union and admired the Houghton family to his end. He also operated a house painting business in Corning for many years.

In 1950, John married Thelma Chadwick, who died in 1970.

John was a life-long hunter and fisherman, bagging several pheasants and his last deer at age 99. BTO enjoyed decades of hunting in New York, Pennsylvania, Montana and Colorado with brothers, sons, grandsons, great-grandsons, nephews and friends. Gardening was also a favorite pass time, with strawberries as a special passion.

John regularly attended Presho Methodist Church.

He was predeceased by both parents, his wives and his daughter Joan Nichols (Lyle) of Wellsboro, PA; infant daughter Jane; infant son Gary and three brothers: Joe (Katie) Bloise who was killed in WWII; Sam (Jenny) (Carolyn) Bloise of Cleveland; Andy (Connie) Bloise of New Castle; sister Mary (Mike) Viggiano of Youngstown, OH; daughter-in-law, Gloria Bloise of Addison; son-in-law Gary Shaw of East Corning and special friends Carol Willett, Nellie Peer and Mary Farrell.

John is survived by three brothers; Frank Bloise, Nick Bloise and Jim Bloise(Rose) all of New Castle, PA. His children: Lewis (Marilyn) Bloise of Painted Post; Joyce (Gerald) Walter of Corning, Joy (Sam) Baker of Buffalo; Janet (Terry) O'Bryan of Elmira; John R. (Kathryn) Bloise of Addison; and Ronald Bloise of Las Vegas.

Grandchildren surviving are Patricia (Karl) Logenbach of Harrisburg; Scott (Laurie)Nichols of Wellsboro; Wendy (Graydon) Daines of Addison; Regina (Barry) Burkhart of Dallas; Tony (Victoria) Bloise of Carlsbad, CA; Brenda (Robert) Farr of Corning; Louie (Debbie) Walter of Painted Post; Kathy (Mark) Jones of Painted Post; Penny Kio of Corning; Amy and Heather Baker of Buffalo; Bryan (Dina) Shaw of Corning; Lorna (Karl) Colburn of Corning; Jill (John) Spiwak of Connecticut; Jack (Robin) Bloise of Clifton Park NY; Kimberlie (Brent) Jacobson of Portland, OR; Rebecca (Scott) Manning of Miami; Michael (Virginia) Bloise of Raleigh; Joseph (Nicole) Bloise of Nazareth PA; Alicia (Joe) Malory and Shannon (Trever) Allen of Indiana. Also surviving are 35 great-grandchildren and 13 great-great grandchildren, many nieces and nephews and special friend and caretaker, Gail Harns of Corning.

Services will be conducted by Haughey Funeral Home, Inc. Calling hours at North Baptist Church on 127 Sly Ave. Corning on Friday Sept. 26, from 1-3pm and from 6-8pm. Funeral service at North Baptist at 11am on Saturday, Sept. 27th officiated by son-in-law Sam Baker and Pastor Bill Lusk of Presho Church.
