John B. Whitener was the son of Benjamin Whitener and Mary Magdalene Whisenhunt. He married Sarah Weaver Feb. 6. 1814 in Lincoln Co., NC. He and Sarah had nine children; all their births were recorded in the "Births and Baptismal Records of Zion Lutheran Church". Names, spouse, and date of marriage is given.

John B. Whitener wrote his will July 29, 1854 which was probated in January 1855. In the will he mentions, Sarah, his wife, and children, Abel, Elizabeth, Hannah, Anna, Jonas, Andrew, and Levi. Solomon and Maria died before the will was written. His sons, Abel and Andrew, were the executors of the will.
