My mother, Martha Abbe was an intelligent and gregarious woman. She was raised in the Connecticut River valley in simple circumstances, the oldest surviving child of seven. She delivered newspapers and worked in tobacco as an adolescent. After her mother died and her father remarried to a much younger woman Sarah, Martha and Sarah became as sisters. A good student, she maintained a life long friendship with her high school English teacher. Martha deeply regretted that it was not financially possible for her to attend college.

She was known for many years as Princey, a fond name her husband gave her, derived from his description of her as his Danish princess.

Martha was active in the organizations that she joined. In particular she became Worthy Matron of Adelphi Chapter No. 2, OES in Springfield, MA and later District Marshal. She conducted innumerable group dinners to raise money for Adelphi Chapter.

Martha liked friends, a cigarette, a drink, a game of cards and conversation. She also read constantly.

She was devoted to her husband and a loving and concerned parent to my sister and me. It was planned to have a third child—Bruce, if a boy. World War II intervened and Bruce was not to be.

Martha died of a cerebral hemorrhage in the summer cottage by Lake Sunapee in New Hampshire that her husband built for our use 34 years before. (bio by: Earl Abbe)
